Hi there,
Just a quick question in regards to Japanese imported used cars and wound back odometers.
I've heard from many people and an aa roadservice tech something along the lines of "Being an import, its probably done more km's that what it says"
Given this, how accurate are these claims? Are the "Odometer Check/Verification" stickers 100% accurate?
Another question is, are cars imported with wound back odometers allowed to be registered in nz?
Im currently looking at purchasing a Mazda Atenza Imported in 06' and the carjam report says that it was imported (and sold) by a dealer with only 7,000km (Seven Thousand) after being regsitered in Japan in 2002 hence I ask this question.

Hi there,
To be honest, speedo tampering does happen and can be hard to prove.
It is possible to get very low mileage cars from Japan, and the condition should represent this. Our odo certificates mean that our guys have physically inspected the odometer or
established a mileage trail that supports the current mileage. Not 100% garunteed but
better than nothing.
I think that statement has some small truth but can't be failrly applied to all low mileage vehicles. It would be possible for a car in Japan to do 7k in 4 years.
