Hi there - I'm looking at purchasing a NZ New 2.0L Classic Pt Cruiser @ 93,000kms. What is the recommended mileage to change the cambelt/timing belt and should the water pump be changed at the same time? This particular vehicle is listed privately which is not ideal because I won't be covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA) however I do intend to obtain a pre-purchase inspection and then a 3 year mechanical breakdown insurance policy. Is the MBI a wise choice?...and apart from the cambelt is there anything else I should watch out for or be aware of please? Thanks, I need all the advice I can get!..don't put me off this car though - I love them :)

Hi there,
It is recommended to change the cambelt and tensioner at 192,000km or 92 months.
I would replace the waterpump at the same time as it is a big job, and normally in the same area as the cambelt.
Definately get the car inspected before purchase, and I recommend a breakdown/ mechanical policy and make sure you know the conditions and what is not covered.
Fuel economy is not the best, with the combined figure listed at 8.9L/100km.
That's all I know.
