I have never driven long distance to Wellington from New Plymouth before and am planning to do so soon. Although my car is serviced with WOF done as well, I wonder if I should get it checked before going on the road trip? If yes, does AA do that (my WOF is due in Apr 2016).

My car is a Mazda 2, do you think it can take the distance given its smaller engine size?

You just need to call into your local AA centre and book a free safety check.
I see no reason your car should not handle the trip. The roads down there are pretty good.
