Hi, I had my 2013 Skoda serviced in October last year and have since done 6,000km. The car has needed a top up of oil 1/2 a litre. It was the same before the last service with the car needing extra oil. How normal is this in the VW engines??

I would consider this a fairly normal amount of usage between services, and well within the manufactures oil usage limit. I wouldn't think there is cause for concern at this stage.
This is actually fairly common with most engines, not just specific to VW.
Other variables would be the conditions when checked, was the level on the stick exactly on the mark when the engine oil level was first checked , and was it checked after 6k the same way?. If in doubt see the dealer, and work through a true oil consumption test.
