Lesson types and AA Member savings
There are a variety of lesson types to suit different needs. You don't need to be an AA Member to book a lesson, but Members save on every lesson, and if you're under 20, a Youth Membership pays for itself fast.
To qualify for the AA Member discount, the student must hold their own AA Membership. T&Cs apply.
What's in a one-hour lesson?
Each session with your qualified AA Driving Instructor is built around three parts and is adapted to your driving level.
- Pre-drive briefing: your instructor sets clear goals for the session
- On-road coaching: progressive skill improvement through practice and repetition including steering, indicating, shoulder checks, and basic slow speed manoeuvres. Build up to congested urban areas, lane changing, roundabouts, higher speeds, motorway driving and night driving
- Debrief & next steps: honest feedback and what to practise before your next lesson
How to book a lesson

Choose location & time
Pick a location, time and instructor.
Create your profile
Create an AA Driving School login. It must be in the name of the person taking the lesson. If the student already has a MyAA profile, we recommend using the same login.
Connect your Membership
Add the AA Membership number of the person taking the lesson to unlock great discounts. If the student is not a Member, it's easy to join.
You don't need to be an AA Member to book a lesson.
Book, pay & drive
Complete the booking form, type of lesson and payment details. You will receive a confirmation email once your booking is complete.

The number of lessons you need will depend on your driving experience, confidence and learning pace. Some learners need only a few lessons to prepare for a test, while others benefit from more structured coaching.

To reschedule a driving lesson, you will need to cancel your existing lesson first. Once the lesson has been cancelled, the credit will be available in your account, which you can then use to rebook a lesson at your preferred date and time.
You can cancel a lesson by logging in to your AA Driving School profile and clicking the “X” next to the booking you wish to cancel. Once selected, confirm the cancellation to proceed.
If you have unused credits and would like to request a refund, please contact our team by calling 0800 223 748 or emailing ADriverTraining@aa.co.nz. Refund requests will be reviewed in accordance with our terms and conditions, and our team will advise you of the available options.

AA Driving School is operated by AA Driver Training Limited. AA Driving School provides driving lessons, Road Code practice tests, licence test preparation, and the AA Defensive Driving Course. Official driver licence tests are conducted by NZTA-authorised testing agents. The New Zealand Automobile Association (Incorporated) separately acts as an agent of NZTA for the learner licence theory test.
