An independent assessment

It's illegal to drive your vehicle on the road if it doesn't meet the WoF requirements and doesn't display a valid WoF sticker.

Get a reliable Warrant of Fitness (WoF) inspection from the experts. We'll provide an independent assessment of your car's safety.

As a WoF agent, we're required to follow the car inspection requirements manual (VIRM). These requirements are defined and monitored by NZTA.

These are a general safety check and include (but are not limited to):

  • Tyre condition
  • Brake operation
  • Structural condition
  • Lights, doors and windows
  • Windscreen washers and wipers
  • Safety belts and airbags
  • Speedometer, steering and suspension
  • Exhaust and fuel system
  • Horn

View the full list of requirements on the NZTA website.

AA Vehicle Testing stations

You’ll receive:

  • Fast, convenient service
  • Comfortable waiting rooms with complimentary tea and coffee
  • Facilities to pay your car registration or road user charges

Certificate of Fitness (CoF) checks are also available at selected sites.

Renewing your WoF

Once your car passes the Warrant of Fitness (WoF) inspection, you're required to keep it in this condition. The frequency of the check depends on when your car was first registered.

Vehicle inspections

An AA Pre Purchase Inspection is very different from a WoF. There are inspection areas not covered under the WoF. If you're purchasing or selling a vehicle we recommend that you reduce your risk and get an independent evaluation of the vehicles condition at time of purchase.

Our AA Pre Purchase vehicle inspections include exterior and interior inspections, driveline, engine, cooling system, suspension and steering, brakes, wheels and tyres and vehicle operation.

A Warrant of Fitness is a regular check to ensure your car is safe to drive on the road. It’s compulsory for light vehicles (cars, station wagons, vans, 4WDs, SUVs, light trucks), trailers and motorcycles.

To book a WoF inspection either call us on 0800 456 654, book online or call into one of our sites. Where possible we will fit you in or organise a booking for you. We will generally be able to book your car in on the same or the next day. All AA Auto Centres nationwide offer Warrant of Fitness inspections.

The WoF inspection will take between 25-35 minutes. You can wait and have a free coffee or tea in our comfortable waiting area or you can drop your car off.

As a WoF agent, AA Auto Centres follow the vehicle inspection requirements manual (VIRM) in which requirements are defined and monitored by NZ Transport Association. The Warrant of Fitness inspection includes tyre condition, brake operation, structural condition, lights, doors and windows, windscreen washers and wipers, safety belts and airbags, speedometer, steering and suspension and exhaust and fuel system.

If your vehicle fails a WoF inspection, you're not allowed to drive it on the road unless it's being operated solely for the purpose of obtaining a new WoF – regardless of whether your old WoF has expired or not. We can fix all the items that require attention.

Your vehicle can be re-inspected by the same WoF agent at no extra charge within 28 days of the initial WoF inspection. If you go over the 28 days from the initial inspection, you will need to have a new WoF inspection and pay the fee again.
