We have just purchased a used CX5 and it comes with a kit rather than a spare. My brain is telling me to get a spare as I can think of numerous punctures my family has had in the last few years on Christchurch roads due to builders seeming to like scattering nails and screws where ever they tow a trailer.

What is your opinion of the kits - Do they damage the tyre / Rim or is it expensive to have the type cleaned and repaired? With a spare a change is a relatively easy job for an able bodies person and then I just drop the punctured tyre off for a fix thats cheap and reliable.

I'm thinking of purchasing a spare rim and tyre of the same spec but am I being silly?

Hi there,
It is not a silly question or thought by any means.
A lot of vehicles are going this way, with a pump and sealer in the place of a spare wheel. From what we have heard is that tyre companies don't like to clean out the glue and repair a puncture but instead sell a new tyre. The kit doesn't damage the rim and is not usually damaging to the tyre but is more messy. If you can fit a spare, jack and tools in the boot safely then this might give you a peace of mind option.

Thanks - I think you've sealed it - I hadn't even thought of the issue that even if it does no damage to the rubber the tyre dealer won't want to touch it and instead insists on selling you a new tyre. Imagine if I'd had to buy new tyres each time as I've had a roofing nail in the last year, my staff member in the other company tyre had two screws in as many years, we had one in the family Murano and thats an expensive tyre and my daughter had one in her car 2 months ago. Thanks for the advice :)
