Battery care during lockdown

Worried about your car battery going flat now you're not using it?

Why do car batteries go flat over time if the car is not driven?

It is important to understand that all batteries have a natural tendency to go flat over time when not used.  This applies to battery operated tools, mobile phones and cars are no exception.

Lead Acid batteries (automotive batteries) lose charge over time particularly when not used for extended period. The current lock down situation is a good example.

The rate of discharge on the battery depends on the bells and whistles and extra auxiliary installations in your car. The rate of discharge is greater if your battery is old. The electrical devices in your car continue to use energy to maintain its memory and setting while the car is parked

“Tips to avoid your car battery going flat ”

  • The best option is to use a maintenance charger (also known as trickle / float). Obtain a maintenance charger suitable for the battery for your car. Maintenance charger will always keep your battery fully charged. The charger will automatically turn on as the charge in the battery drops below required voltage. Once the battery has reached its required charge voltage the charger will stop charging. You can leave this on the battery for as long as you want as it will not damage or over charge your battery. The charger is simple to use and easy to connect. AA Roadside technicians can help to recommend and install a maintenance charger as they carry these with them for your convenience.

Precaution : The charger needs to be used in a sheltered area away
from the elements of the weather. Get advice if need be.

  • If your vehicle is parked by the roadside and you do not have a secured place to install trickle charger the next best option is to start the vehicle every two to three day and run the  motor for 15-20 mins. It is important the you give enough time to the alternator to put back charge into the battery. While the vehicle is running do not use any electrical device (radio, phone charger, lights)

Precaution : if your car is in a garage ensure that the garage door is
open ,alternatively reverse it on to the drive way. Always have your park
brake on while the engine is running

  • It is not a good idea to disconnect the battery terminal in a vehicle. Most modern vehicles run on several modules (microcomputers) to maintain memory and setting and need consistent supply of power. In many instances, once you lose this, you will need the dealer to reset / programme the settings. This can be expensive.

Precaution : Get professional advice from your dealer or an
          automotive technician.
