I have just read the question about GPS Navigation, and was shocked to read a recommendation for Navman.

I bought a Navman iCN 530 in September 2006 whilst on holiday in the UK assuming good support for New Zealand mapping unfortunately on return to NZ I found the NZ map was unavailable.

In November 2006 Navman released the June 2006 map for the iCN 530 this being the first and only NZ map for their then flagship model. The iCN 530 is discontinued and no future maps will be produced.

The only map for my Navman does not have the mid 2006 Auckland Motorway bypass changes so can not be used around Auckland without local knowledge, and I am sure Auckland is not the only place in NZ with new bypasses etc.

Can you recommend a GPS navigation system that will have guaranteed support as I do not want to contribute to the landfills, especially in such an expensive way. Naturally after my experience I do not want to hear "Navman"! at the $950 you mentioned this is a lot of money for what without support will be useless in a, believe me, surprisingly short space of time.

Regards

Ian

Thanks for the feedback, it highlights a 'feature' that you don't read about on the box!

I have confirmed with NAVMAN that indeed your model is no longer supported with new mapping software due to the cost of development for what is now an obsolete model to the company.

They have said they may assist customers in situations such as yourself with upgrade solutions on a case by case basis. This may mean some assistance to upgrade to the later version of GPS unit.

You don't mention if the unit was new when you purchased it or second hand. If it was new 16 months ago when you purchased it, I would strongly recommend contacting Navman to see what they can do for you.

The competitiveness of the market has now forced the RRP of the unit we mentioned down to a more reasonable $663 at some retailers.

Another option we have been made aware of is the TomTom range, we have yet to sample the product but understand their map updating is more accessible as it can be done online.

If TomTom releases a new map of New Zealand within 30 Days of activating your TomTom it will be made available free of charge*
*(via download only from TomTom Home)

Additionally, if you purchase any TomTom device between Feb 4th 2008 and Mar 31st 2008 you'll receive a bonus GeoSmart Map Upgrade valued at $149* (*via redemption).

TomTom's competitor products to the Navman S90i are the One XL ($599 rrp) or the Go720 (launched late feb, RRP TBA).
