We have three children under 4 and are wanting to sell our Toyota Camry and buy a people mover as we just don't have enough space in the Camry for easy access to the three car seats (two are still rear facing). I have looked at a lot of people movers but seem to think that either the Mazda MPV or Toyota Estima would be a good option. We are hoping to be able to get one for around $10k. I have always bought Toyotas and found them to be really reliable and have never needed too much maintenance. Is there much difference between the Mazda MPV and the Estima? Also can you recommend any other models that may suit our needs?
Thanks for your help.

Provided you are looking at a front wheel drive version of the Estima then it would get my vote over the Mazda.

Earlier version of the Estima/Previa were rear wheel drive and are a mechanics nightmare to work on. With hourly rates on the increase you need to think about your future servicing costs.

With kids in mind you may want to pay particular attention to the type of seatbelts fitted in the rear to any vehicle you look at. The older the vehicle the more likely they are to have a lap type belt only which is not desirable for any rear seat passengers. Not a game breaker but you may have to allow for three point belts to be fitted if possible.

What is becoming a very popular, affordable and economical family car is the Honda Stream. Only available as a used import it ticks a lot of boxes for many. Definitely worth a look.

The Honda Odyssey has long been a popular choice for families as well, but in your price range you may be looking at high kilometre examples. Expensive transmission repairs are not uncommon with the earlier and high mileage Odyssey’s.
