Hi,
we are wanting to buy a used car and are currently considering Toyota Ipsum 240i (2001), Honda Stream 1700cc (2001) and Nissan Liberty 2000cc(2001). What would be the main differences in reliability, maintenance costs and fuel consumption?
At the moment we are inclined to buy the Ipsum as much more space and stronger engine but a bit concerned about future costs and reliability.

Kind Regards,
Andrea

I would tend to sway towards the Ipsum anyway, but those thoughts would be confirmed if the Honda or Nissan were fitted with a Constant Variable Transmission. While these transmissions are getting more and more reliable the very early examples still need to be treated with caution. If you can avoid them, it may be a wise option.

The Toyota Ipsum has been a very popular used import into NZ for a long time and has a very good reputation for reliability, economy and reasonable running costs.

The Honda Stream is also becoming more and more popular on our roads but I would much prefer the 2.0 litre power unit and 5-speed auto if the budget can stretch that far.

You may want to check the rear seat belt configuration in whatever vehicle you decide. A rear lap and diagonal seat belt in every seating position is much safer than a straight lap belt only.
