We currently have an all wheel drive Holden Adventra. We need to replace this and we would like to buy a second hand car under $40K. We like a more 'European looking car', however, we want more fuel efficiency than our Holden Adventra currently provides. We do quite a lot of mileage each year and the current car is at 160,000 km and needs replacing.

We are now mainly driving on open sealed roads and we are forever carrying the dog, kids and plenty of luggage. I love that the current car has lots of grunt when you need to overtake. My dream car is an Audi stationwagon, but need a Lotto ticket for that one!

Would appreciate feedback on what car would best suit our needs and budget.

After the Adventra I suspect the worlds your oyster in regards to improving on fuel consumption.

I have listed some vehicles below which I suggest may be worth a look and stayed with station wagons in the main.

Whatever you decide I suggest you look for the latest model with the lowest odometer and a proven past service history. My preference would be NZ new with the price range you are in.

  • Subaru Legacy / Outback
  • Mazda6 wagon
  • Audi A3 (tiptronic transmission)
  • Skoda Octavia Scout TDI
  • VW Passat
  • Honda Accord Euro Tourer
  • Nissan Qashqai (bit of the odd one out but maybe worth a look)
