I am buying a car from a member of my family and wondering if it would be cheaper, or more advantageous, for me to transfer ownership to myself or to my company, which is just a registered 'shelf' company at present. I'm thinking longer term as I plan to have the car for many years and don't want the car involved in any possible personal or even matrimonial disputes should I get married! Your advice would be appreciated.

One risk you take by not changing the ownership is any fines / infringements you may receive will be sent to the current registered owner which is not always desirable.

If you want to stay clear of any family issues then I suggest you need to take full responsibility for the car and get the ownership changed.

You may need to seek advice from an accountant re the benefits of whether to change the ownership into your name or the business.

Possible matrimonial disputes I will definitely stay away from.
