Hi,
I'm looking at a 2007 2.4L Avensis Li as a replacement to my early 90's Terrano and its $800 6monthly WoFs. Need lots of room for gear, and am doing 60km a day, 80% on the motorway.
I keep reading about issues with the D4 engine - is this applicable to all the avensis models, or just the 2.0L? The plastic cover on this particular 2.4l engine says D4-VVTi.
The other option i am considering is a 3.0l 2005 Outback, which i assume will be thirsty. Both similar KM's, outback about $1k more.

Thanks a lot.

Hi there,
It seems that all Toyota D4 engines have potential to give the same issue, also identified by engine code FSE. So 2.0ltr 1AZ-FSE and 2.4ltr 2AZ-FSE. No issues with Outback except Subaru engines are not the most fuel efficient.

Thanks. So D4 with the VVTI injection still suffers this issue? Running 98/high octane fuel resolves this issue, or just lessens the likelihood of an issue? Is it enough of an issue to be put off the Avensis?

It's hard to know how to spot a vehicle that has a clogged intake which is one of the things to happen, I've not heard if fuel type helps prevent it. I just know that these engines can give issue and can be expensive to remedy.
