I'm interested in buying a mid/large size station wagon for under $10k and want to know if there are any options I should stay away from due to any known mechanical/reliability issues.
At this stage I'm thinking about:
Toyota Avensis (approx 2006-2012)
Mazda 6/Atenza (approx 2007-2012)
Honda Accord (2008-2012)
Subaru Legacy (same age, non turbo)
Subaru Outback (2004-2009).

Any advice about what to stay away from would be great!

Also, if I have the option of either newer high mileage or older low mileage, which is likely to be better?

Hi all of these models are good choices however the Subaru's do tend to be quite thirsty and their engines are more prone to oil leaks due to their orientation.

In terms of mileage try to find a model with 100,000km or less if possible and then look at the age- the newer the better but obviously the over all condition should be considered too.
