I am looking to buy a new vehicle up to $40k. I would be interested in your recommendation re a vehicle that is practical and economical. I have a labrador dog, like to go mountain biking, camping, skiing, to the beach etc. I will be travelling for approx 45 - 60 minutes to work on open road and motorways 3-4 days per week. I currently drive a 1996 Ford courier ute. I am female, 58 years young.

You have several great choices in this price range.

Listed are a few new vehicles that are definitely worth a look. Prices range from mid 30K up to just over 40K.

  • Kia Sportage - Almost the complete package at the moment. Great value for money.

  • Hyundai ix35 – Similar running gear to the Kia different body shape.

  • Mitsubishi ASX – Baby SUV from the Mitsubishi family. Another good value for money vehicle .

  • Mitsubishi Outlander - Big brother to the ASX. A very good and underrated vehicle.

  • Nissan Qashqai – A great seller on a global stage for Nissan
.

There are various options of the above vehicles including Petrol and Diesel plus 2 and 4Wheel Drive.

Can I suggest you have a look at the above vehicles and see if any appeal and come back with specific questions.

Maybe others reading this question may have an opinion as well.

Feel free to comment.

Thanks for your information re SUV's. Could you please let me know about station wagons in the $30k to $40k price bracket. Don't necessarily need to have 4WD etc.

Listed are some station wagons that may appeal. Certainly an opportunity to have a look at the European vehicles available.

  • Mazda6 - Long time favourite.
  • Ford Mondeo - Very good road handling vehicle
  • VW Passat - Over your 40K limit but worth a look and you may pick up a ex demonstrator.
  • Subaru Legacy - Has the benefits of AWD with improved fuel consumption.
  • Skoda Octavia - Don’t let the name put you off. A very underrated vehicle.

Hi Jack,

thanks for the information. I have checked out all recommendations so far and have particularly liked the Mazda6. However, I was wondering what you would say to a Toyota Corrolla wagon 1.5 . I have come across an ex demo 2010 for $27K. Would appreciate your feedback.
