Hi there,

We recently bought a "2009" Toyota Yaris. The WOF report that came with it indicated that it is 2005; this is also shown when I put our numberplate into www.rightcar.govt.nz.

I have read that the year is determined based on the 01/01/07 date. Does this mean the car was made in 2005 but not registered anywhere in the world until 2009? I do not understand what 2005 could mean.

Thanks.

It sounds to me like this car is a 2005. On the registration label on the windscreen there are 2 dates. The first will say something like "2005 Toyota Yaris" and below that there is another date when the car was first registered in New Zealand. It will have the month and year, so for example it might say 06/09 if the car was imported and first registered in NZ in June 2009. A car that was sold new in NZ will have 06/05 for example.

So, a few questions about your car;
What are the dates on the label?
What makes you think it's a 2009 - was it advertised that way?
Did you buy the car from a dealer or privately?
If from a dealer, what date is on the CIN (or any paperwork you signed)?

If checking the plate on one of the online registration sites says 2005, it's almost certain the car is a 2005 as the data comes from NZTA Land data.
