Hello. We are considering buying a car for a commute of about 80 kms per day, for 5 days a week, for about 42 weeks a year. Could you please advise which would be a better car as far as saving for petrol goes, the first option is Honda Civic Hybrid 2008 with about 50 Ks mileage (claimed fuel consumption below 5 l/100 kms), against 2012 Ford Fiesta LX with only about 2 Ks mileage, fuel consumption about 6.3 l/100 kms, against 2012 Ford Fiesta Diesel with about 5 Ks mileage. We have not driven a diesel before and do not know much about maintenance and road-charges additional to cost of diesel etc. All three cars are similarly priced, between 20 - 22,000 cash price. We also have never driven a hybrid before, and the claimed fuel consumption is just too good to dismiss, at least in the first instance. Thanks!

Out of the cars you have listed the Ford Fiesta 1.6L diesel engine is a good choice and it's claimed to use a frugal 4.4L/100km of fuel. If you insist on having a hybrid you should consider a Toyota Prius C 1.5L which is claimed to use 3.9L/100km of fuel. New small diesel engines are almost on par with hybrid vehicles fuel consumption figures, the diesel option should also prove easier to sell when the time comes.
