It's time for me to upgrade my 97 Subaru Legacy.

I'd like something a bit smaller, the size of the Impreza seems about right to me.

I have enjoyed having a 4WD although a lot of my driving is simply to the supermarket, it has come in handy on some NZ country/ski roads.

I am a bit concerned about the "boy racer" image of the Impreza though.

Can you recommend any other similar mid-sized hatches?

Fuel consumption, safety and reliability are all important factors for me.

Gisela.

I can understand what you are saying about the boy racer image with the Subaru Impreza which has not been helped by the huge influx of Japanese imports. A shame really, as the Impreza range does provide for motoring needs such as yours.

Subaru sold new, a base model Impreza for around $25,000 as a run out special last year, before launching the current new model. It was great value for money and was purchased on its merits by many looking for a safe, reliable well priced vehicle. Second hand they would be a great value for money buy.

Other hatch type vehicles to consider in my opinion would be the Mazda3, Toyota Corolla, Ford Focus or VW Golf.

Don't give up on the Subaru however especially if you are looking at near new.

For trips to the snow they are ideal. Expect slightly higher fuel consumption however with the AWD system.
