This small/medium SUV sector is the fastest growing sector of the new car market at present, so I can understand why you are keen on one.
To be honest, all the models you refer to would suit your needs. I'm not sure whether you are talking new or used, but given the models you talk about, I presume you are at least looking about near new.
The RAV4 is the evergreen Kiwi favourite and you can't really go wrong with a RAV4. The current model has a CVT transmission, and while earlier CVTs had a poor reputation for reliability, the new generation CVT is perfectly fine. If you are a sedate driver, you will enjoy the smoothness of a CVT and the fuel-efficiency benefits. If you are an enthusiastic driver, you may find the slip and flare less than satisfying when you accelerate hard, but that's the nature of a CVT.
I'm also presuming you refer to the current Kuga with the 1.6 litre turbo-charged engine, not the previous model that came to NZ for about 12 months on run-out with the 5 cylinder Volvo engine?
While the old one was good, it was very heavy on fuel, whereas the new one is very economical in comparison. Overall, it's a great vehicle which is a great driver's vehicle with pleasant styling.
Recent Jeep product is great too, although may be a little heavy on fuel.
Basically, these are all good vehicles and it comes down to personal preference. The RAV 4 is an old Kiwi favourite, the Kuga a pleasure to drive and the Jeep has rugged styling with plenty of space and clever features.
Buying direct from Japan can save a few dollars but can also be frought with problems, as you are buying sight unseen and relying on someone else's description, which may be at odds with your own expectation.
The first thing to consider with importing is to ensure the vehicle you're planning to import meets NZ standards. The main traps are things such as; previous accident damage, mechanical faults and underbody corrosion - which are all potential pitfalls.

This is another one that should be fine. Earlier models didn't enjoy a great reputation for reliability, but I'm sure the bugs should be ironed out by now.
