I am looking at buying a 93 SWB Toyota Landcruiser import, the 3.5 diesel manual, with about 125 000 km on the clock. Can you give me a brief rundown on any faults etc with this type of vehicle? Thank you.

It's a tough question to answer without making a lot of assumptions but I will give it my best shot.

Let's assume the Taurus station-wagon has a 3 litre V6 engine and the Hyundai Accent is fitted with a 1.6 litre 4 cylinder power unit.

On a highway driving cycle I would estimate the fuel consumption for the Taurus to be around the 9.5 litres per 100km mark (30mpg) and the Accent to be within 7.0 litres per 100kms (40mpg).

So on paper, the Accent looks the better option but if you planning on travelling the distances you mention, then the V6 may be the better bet comfort and performance wise.

The harder you push the Accent then the more fuel used, whereas the bigger engine in the Taurus should enable it to cruise without too much effort on the throttle.

It comes down to a choice between economy and comfort I guess.

Whatever you decide have a great trip.
