I am currently looking to buy a used 4WD Diesel to tow a horse float.

I am interested in the Isuzu Bighorn (1996-2002 models) but have had conflicting advice.

I would appreciate any information/advise that you may have.

Isuzu Bighorn’s are in general, a good choice as a towing vehicle. They have good low down torque which is desirable when towing loads such as horse floats.

By today’s standards, they lack a few refinements such as ride quality and safety equipment however they do offer good value for money.

Up until around 1998 Bighorn diesel’s used a 4-cylinder engine with a designation of 4JG2. After 1998, the engine was replaced with a designation of 4JX1.

Unfortunately the 4JX1’s have had their share of problems especially with the electronic fuel injectors and wiring. From what I can gather they have been known to create severe head scratching in workshops when engine problems develop.

A proven past service history may elevate some of these concerns or look for the earlier models.

Alternatively the Diesel Toyota Landcruiser Prado (3.0litre), Mitsubishi Pajero (2.8litre) or Nissan Terrano would be worth a look.
