Hi Jo,
We have recently written an article for Directions that may help: http://www.aa.co.nz/membership/aa-directions/driver/buying-your-first-car-101/
Just a side note, the Fiesta is a safe used car but can have transmission issues so not really an affordable first car choice. So my picks are, Mazda 2, 3, Demio, Axela, Suzuki Swift type Models.

Hi that was very helpful, thank you. I was also looking at the Golfs and Polo's any advice on those? Lastly should I beware of the cars with "on road costs not included". Thanks JO

I like these cars, but some say servicing and repairs can be a little on the higher side. VW's of this year and price range can be a bit problematic, so a good pre purchase inspection is recommended and particular attention to the engine and transmission servicing and condition advised.
On road costs are usually a part of buying a car from a dealer/ trader they can include car grooming, registration, fuel ect. I would just ask what the amount is and what it covers. You still pay ORC in the end it just depends on if it is absorbed into the vehicle price or added as an extra fee.
