I am looking to buy a van type 2-4 berth motorhome with models between 2001 & 2007, with 100-250k on the clock. Can you tell me if any of the following makes have serious or on going mechanical faults. 1. Ford Transit, either manual or triptonic. 2. Volkswagen LT35. 3. Fiat Ducato - I have read that the 2.3L Sevel X250 chasis models have transmission failures because of their high reverse gearing. Are these available in New Zealand, and is this your experience. 4. Mercedes Benz. Any other comments will be welcomed.
Ross.

There is no one statement that answers all your questions as every Motorhome you mention carries some sort of potential risk.

The one certainty is the higher the mileage the greater that risk regardless of make/model.

My best advice is to find a Trader who specialises in Motorhomes and sells all the different brands.

The downside of visiting outlets who only sell particular makes/models of Motorhomes is you may only get told what they want you to hear.

You also need to narrow your selection down by deciding on whether you need a 2 or 4 berth Motorhome. It will make a big difference in narrowing down your options in terms of vehicle and budget.

The one vehicle that you don’t mention is the Mitsubishi Canter 3.6 litre Diesel. For many, these vehicles are very hard to beat and offer excellent value for money from a technical perspective.

If you wish to talk to a Motorhome Trader who will give you an unbiased opinion on all the different options then please email direct to aatechnicalservices@aa.co.nz and I will provide you with contact details.
