I was just wanting to know what it would cost to have a cambelt replaced on a 2004 Mitsubishi Grandis, and is it possible to do it yourself?

If it was a straightforward job with no extra's, I would imagine around 5 hours labour which would include replacing the water pump.

Work on an average labour rate of approx $85 per hour. I would think around the $300 mark for parts but an awful lot does depend on what actually needs to be replaced.

Without all the correct equipment and experience I would not attempt this job at home. There are too many things to go wrong, all with potentially disastrous consequences.

For example, getting the crankshaft pulley off can be a major job without the correct tools while retightening the pulley bolt can be equally challenging.

Getting the timing setup wrong can also lead to expensive engine damage on start up.

I suggest you take the vehicle to your preferred repairer and ask them to give you an estimate (parts and labour) to replace the belt prior to starting any dismantling. Once they have inspected the vehicle and checked for any obvious other problems, they should be able to provide an estimate which is pretty close to the final amount.

Thanks jbiddle for the reply, much appreciated.
