My Mitsubishi Lancer 08 with 170,000 km recently over heated. I started hearing noise, then started losing power and then ended up getting towed home.
My cousin had a look and found that the water pump had leaked so there was no coolant, and when we tried to start the car it would not start. He thinks the head gasket is going to need fixing.

Should I bother getting it fixed, or should I just take it to the scrap yard for disposal?

I don't want to pay much if anything to get this car fixed ($1K max).
Or are there better ways to get more cash for the car?

Hi there,
By the sounds of it, the engine could be overheated to the point of seizing and would be not economical to repair an engine that got that hot.
A used engine if found could cost almost $2k to change incl. buying the engine, and even this could be on the verge of exceeding the value of the car. Private sale on Trade me or the likes would have the potential to get you the highest sale price- if you can find a mechanically minded person who happens to have access to a replacement engine.

Any guestimate how much I would get for the car, Trademe versus scrap? $300?
