I have a 6 year old Mazda2 (bought new) which has just failed a WOF because one of the rear seat belts doesn’t retract fast enough. I understand that this is a WOF requirement but wonder whether it’s reasonable that the retractor should fail after only 6 years, esp considering my back seat is very seldom used, only occasionally by grandchildren, and the seat belt therefore has not had a lot of use. I have been quoted $730 to fix it, I think replacing the belt and mechanism. In your opinion, is it acceptable that this would fail after only 6 years and if not, could this be covered by the CGA as the car warranty expired a year ago?

Hi reasons for slow belt retraction doesn't always mean that the belts retraction mechanism has failed. The belt may have become sticky from food or drink. Try pulling the belt out pegging it in the extended position, then clean the belt. The last steps are to allow it to dry then dress the belt in a light coating of silicone spray.

If this does not remedy the issue the the CGA may apply find out more here...
