sometimes the abs light on my console comes on and stays on, is this a serious problem?

The ABS light should not cause the brakes to fail but will mean that the brakes revert to non-ABS, so the wheels will lock up under hard braking. It may be something as simple as a wheel sensor, so is not necessarily serious, but it is something you should have looked at.
