I have a 2002 Ford Focus. Yesterday and a couple of times in the past when I have turned on the key, the engine will not start.

If I sit for a few minutes and retry, the engine will normally start. All the lights come on but no sound from the engine at all.

Once the engine has started - no further problems.

Could it be the battery or something more sinister.

One easy way to check the battery is to either push the horn button or turn the headlights on when the car won't start. In other words when you are trying to start the engine.

If they power up as normal then it won't be the battery.

It sounds like either a starter motor problem or the ignition switch itself.

You may have to leave the car at your local repairer and ask him to check the starting during the day to help identify the problem and to avoid guess work and unnecessary repairs.

While the engine eventually starts these problems have a habit of letting you down at the most inappropriate times so it would pay to get it checked out sooner rather than later.
