I just had new Continental tyres, 205/55 R16, fitted to our 2006 Holden Astra CDX hatch, tyre shop put about 40 PSI in to each new tyre, pressure gauge chart by the filler cap says 27.5 PSI who is right ?

I personally think 27.5 is too low if you want to get decent life out of the tyres and a reasonable fuel consumption, so I'd support the tyre shop in opting for a higher pressure. However, 40 PSI is a little high. Around 34 PSI all round would be a good pressure to run in this type of car.
