I have a Toyota Prado petrol that has a noise coming from the rear diff when turning sharply i.e in a carpark.

I have just had it serviced, and they said the oil was in good condition and that they may need to send the differential unit away to get adjusted or repaired.

Is it possible to "adjust" a diff?

Any thoughts on the problem?

Work on differentials can be complex and expensive, hence the need to ensure you are getting the right information and the job gets down by a specialist.

Your vehicle should be fitted with a limited slip diff and they have what is called a 'break-away' loading torque applied to the unit at initial assembly.

It maybe the torque needs to be reset to allow for wear and tear that has taken place to date.

Depending on the model Prado there could also be some on-board electronic components which influences the way the diff operates.

In some cases, it is best to get the vehicle itself into a specialist so they can experience the problem first, rather than receiving a diff unit to repair which a garage has removed.

It's worth a discussion with your garage to ensure everyone understands what is required to sort the problem out.

Be prepared for a reasonable bill at the end of the day.
