I've only had my 2003 Toyota Caldina for 2 months now and I'm already having to fork out to get its shoddy D4 engine running smoothly. The hesitation, rough running and lack of power is getting too much!

I have been looking at other cars, and quite like the 2003 Mazda Atenza (5 speed 2.3 litre manual).

Do those cars have a good reputation for reliability?

You are not alone. We are hearing more and more stories regarding the frustrations people are having with the Toyota D4 lean burn direct injection engines especially those fitted to used imports.

Spoils their overall reputation for reliability to be honest as the Toyota network in NZ seem to be struggling to overcome these rough running and surging issues.

It would apear these engines do not like the lower 91 octane fuel either which may contribute to, or compound the problems owners are experiencing.

Overall the Mazda Atenza has proven to be a very good choice of vehicle for many motorists however, you need to take each car on its individual merits; it would be dangerous to assume too much.

Do all the necessary checks before committing to purchase.
