I have been taking my car (1996 Honda Civic 70,000km) for regular services at an AA Service and Repair centre. At my last service the brake, clutch and power steering fluids were all replaced for the second time in 2years/30,000km. Does the power steering fluid, especially, normally need to be replaced that regularly?

My father has his car serviced by AA in another town and has only had this done once in about 6years/50,000kms.

I can definitely support the changing of the brake fluid every two years regardless of the distance travelled.

Brake fluid absorbs moisture so it needs to be changed on a regular basis to maintain the best possible braking performance and to help stop corrosion in the internal workings of the brake system.

Power steering fluid is another story; it should be left alone in my view regardless of time or distance travelled. There is no benefit in having this fluid changed.

The only check that should be made is on the reservoir level. You could also argue that if the level is low then the system has a leak and needs further investigation.

Same for the clutch fluid.
