How often should MX-5 Cambelt be replaced?

The first and second generation MX-5's (1998 - 2004) are fitted with a cam belt with a recommended replacement interval of every 100,000km or 5 years whichever comes first.
Its one service item you don't want to take a risk on as the belts can break without warning.
The engine on the early MX-5s is considered to be low risk in regards to extensive damage if the belt was to break, but avoid the inconvenience and get it replaced.
The third and current generation is fitted with a chain which has no recommended change interval.
