I would like your advice on towing a Hard Top camper.

I drive a 2.0 litre automatic 1998 Toyota Corona automatic.

We live in Tauranga and will need to cross the Kaimai's on our trips.

A lot would depend on the size of the camper and its weight when fully loaded.

I suspect it would be no more than approx 800kg. If this is the case a two litre car (in good mechanical condition) should tow the camper comfortably.

The rear suspension may need to be checked out as any weaknesses in this area could potentially create a problem.

Once again an awful lot depends on total weight and load the car is expected to carry also.

Remember the more load that is added to the rear of a front wheel drive car the more steering, traction and overall stability is affected.

It would also pay to check out the towbar type and security and ask your local garage to show you how best to use the automatic to help reduce transmission load and overheating.

When towing any loads, one of the most important components of the engine is the cooling system.

Make sure it’s in better than reasonable condition.
