We are looking at a 2004 Mitsi Lancer that has been in Rotorua since new. Someone mentioned that the sulpher air may cause problems with the electrics. Is this the case and what would the AA inspection look for to confirm whether or not there is an issue with the vehicle. Thanks.

After talking to AA technical staff who cover the Rotorua region, it would appear there are few if any major problems caused by the sulphur environment. I certainly have not been able to confirm any major electrical issues.

Exterior chrome work seems to suffer the most with a black tarnishing quite common. And any aluminium casings or housings can develop a powdery look depending on vehicle age.

It would seem a lot depends on where the cars are based. In the outskirts of town for example any affects of sulphur are far less than those vehicles based or parked in an open environment in the city centre.

It doesn’t pay to assume too much however, so a thorough pre purchase inspection prior to purchase should uncover any obvious issues.

Manufactures generally take precautions to ensure safety related wiring connections are well protected from most environmental fallout.
