I have a 2007 VW Passat which has a fuel consuption rating of 6.2lt per 100km which I'm very happy about and I guess it achieves that low rating because of the ability to run on absolutely no fuel at times.
According to the onboard fuel consumption computer my car uses 0.7lt per 100km while stopped at traffic lights, but amazingly uses 0.0lt while coasting up to those same lights, as well as coasting down hills etc. Can you explain that technology to me and is it patented or are all manufacturers going to offer this in the future.

There will always be some fuel being consumed to keep the engine running in the conditions you mention however it will be infinitesimal.

This technology is very common now as manufactures work hard to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

The beauty of electronics is fuel delivery into an engine can be constantly changing depending on a variety of different conditions.
