Does using headlights increase fuel consumption?

Anon

I think that it would but only marginally - any electronics will drain the battery which, in turn, draws on the car's engine to charge itself.

As a point of reference, check any Top Gear episode where they're on an economy run! They all turn off any in-car electronics that aren't necessary, so they turn off their stereo and air-con, etc.

Having said that, I wouldn't go around turning your headlights off just to save fuel - for one it will be a minor difference and secondly you don't want to crash into something at night! ;)
