I am having a debate with the hubby at the moment. Plane vs car and Ferry. We drive a Holden Commodore Executive V6. Any chance of giving us an ESTIMATED cost of the petrol we would use driving Christchurch to Auckland. I know it is variable, speed, stopping and starting etc but i reckon we are better off in the plane, time is not the issue, cost is.

Cheers for that

As you say, it is variable. However, if you assume your fuel consumption will be approximately 10L per 100km and the trip is around 1,000km, thats 100 litres of fuel one way. Depending on the model and year and whether the car runs on 91 or 95, that's beween $200 and $220 of fuel plus the ferry crossing which depending on sailing times and carrier can also be up to around the $220 mark. You'll also have accommodation cost as you won't want to do that trip in one go. So, allowing say $100 for a motel, the total cost could be around $540 one way.
