How many times do we have to take our car to the same mechanic for repair on the same problem? Each time paying for something else to be done and it's still is not fixed?

If the mechanic has carried out a diagnosis and told you what is required to repair the vehicle, and they are wrong, you should not have to pay for work that was not required. Some faults are very hard to remedy, but a good mechanic should keep you informed of progress and be certain of what they are diagnosing/ testing, and keep you informed when they are not certain. There is no set amount of times a repaired can try and fix a problem, if you are not satisfied you may need to obtain a second opinion or have the vehicle repaired elsewhere.
