Rickshaw

Hi,

I'm taking part in the Rickshaw Run across India in September. To take part I need an International Drivers Licence stamped with category A.

I have a NZ drivers licence which isn't endorsed for a motorcycle. It's unclear from the NZTA website whether a rickshaw amounts to a motorcycle in NZ. If not declared a motorcycle by the Chief Executive it would appear that it is not in which case I should be able to get the category A stamp on my IDL with my car licence. Are you able to confirm?

The rickshaw in question is a symetrical 3 wheeler with a 145cc engine and a top speed of around 50kmph.

Many thanks.

I suspect a rickshaw is a motorcycle because it has hand controls and you sit ‘on’ rather than ‘in’ it.

You need to make direct contact with NZ Driver Licensing on this to be honest. That number is 0800 822 422.

You may also need to think about a back-up plan however, so suggest you assume you will need a Motorcycle licence and plan accordingly.

Good luck with the event it sounds like a lot of fun.
