When you hand in your number plates to de-register a car, is a check carried out for any outstanding fines?

When you hand the number plates over a check will be done on any outstanding registration fees.

If there is, you will be given the opportunity to pay those fees immediately or you can ask for an invoice to be sent from NZTA.

If the registration is current you will be sent a refund of any unused portion of the registration.

No checks are done for outstanding fines at this time but that certainly doesn't mean any fines are automatically cancelled.

You are still required to pay outstanding fines and will be chased through all available legal channels to do so.
