We have just purchased a 18 foot caravan. It has no warrant of fitness or registration as it has been parked at a camp site for the last 10 years.

If we think it possible, are we able to tow the caravan home or is there a permit we can obtain which allows this?

In theory the caravan should only be towed if it was on its way to an authorised facility for a WoF inspection.

The registration is simply a matter of filling out a form (MR2B) which is available from AA Centres or any Vehicle Testing Station. You will then be issued with a new set of number plates. The current cost is approx $95.

There is no inspection required to re-register a caravan.

This is where interpretation of the law may help you. You may be able to argue (if stopped) that you are towing the caravan to a WoF inspection centre or to a place of repair (home). Obviously that argument has less merit the further you tow the van. The fact the van is registered may help you plead your case.

Ruth, my biggest concern in providing you with this advise is safety. Ten years is a long time for a caravan to sit and items such as tyres, brakes and the tow coupling itself may not be up to the task of even a short tow.

There have been some horrendous accidents over the years with trailers especially breaking free from their tow vehicles.

The wiring connection to the tow vehicle / caravan should also be working to warn other motorists of a change in direction and when braking.

If there are any doubts about safety, the caravan should be collected and lifted onto a suitable flat bed truck.

There are no temporary permits issued for the purpose of towing an un-registered or un-warranted vehicle or caravan.

Be careful Ruth and don't do something you may regret.
