Do I need to go through any certification process when I change the back seat of a 5 seater car?

I want to replace the rear seat with two single seats.

Yes, you will need to obtain a Low Volume Certificate as you are effectively modifying the car.

The LVC needs to show the change from 3 to 2 seats and will satisfy the authorities that the modification has been done correctly and safety is not compromised.

Check out your nearest compliance certifier or call landtransport on 0800 699 000.

I strongly advise you to make contact with a certifier before you start any such modifications. Working with them from scratch may save you a lot of time and money.

Also, the records on the landtransport data base will need to be updated. This can be done by filling out a MVR 16 form which are available from your local testing station once the modification has been signed off.
