I am importing my car from Australia to New Zealand and was wondering what permits or certification will be required.

I understand that my car will need a Warrant of Fitness. Is there a permit I can get that will allow me to drive my car on NZ roads for a short period of time so that i can achieve this, for example collect the car from custom`s (wharf) and drive home then from home to be inspected.

It's not that simple I'm afraid. Firstly and most importantly you need to find out whether the car is actually allowed to be imported into NZ. New emission rules have recently been introduced which can stop the importation of late model vehicles as permanent imports.

There are exemptions but that would depend on your circumstances (Kiwi returning home for example or the age of your vehicle).

My best advice is not to make any arrangements to bring the car into NZ without first finding out whether it qualifies or not.

In the meantime visit the LTNZ web site and read infosheet 2.11 Importing Vehicles from Australia.

Regarding the question on driving the car home after its arrival in NZ, absolutely no, the vehicle will need to be transported to the nearest compliance entre.
