My son's girlfriend recently deregistered her car and handed back the plates to NZTA.

Several months later her father arranged for the car to be towed to a wreckers yard. A family friend arrived and put the vehicle on a towing frame and left with her car in tow.

It would appear that the vehicle never arrived at the wreckers yard and was instead dropped on the side of a rural road. She has received a number of tickets issued by the police for no WOF and registration and for the car being parked incorrectly.

Is she responsible for the fines issued against the vehicle?

Because your son's girlfriend was the last registered owner she would be liable for any fines issued by the authorities.

The vehicle needs to be removed from its current location and disposed of correctly as the first priority to stop any future fines being issued.
