I have been through a bit of confusion recently about front number plate position.

Does your number plate have to be displayed on the front of your car, on your bumper?

We have been told by three police officers that as long as it is visible it is fine. but I received a ticket for failing to display the number plate by another officer.

The number plate was in the dash of the car due to the bumper being repaired and is fully visible.

Can you shed some light on this.

Here is my take on the number plate position.

The Transport (Vehicle and Driver Licensing Registration and licensing) Act 1998 Section 17 Supplementary Regulation 1995/136 states the following;

"Motor vehicles must display one plate at the front and one plate at the rear. Plates must be in an upright position to display clearly every letter, figure and distinguishing mark "

Legally the ticket may well have been given for the right reasons but I suggest your best course of action is to write to the Police Infringement Bureau explaining why the plate was on the dash. With any luck they may let you off.
