Hi -- I understand from your previous comments that, when buying from a dealer, I would still be advised to get a full mechanical inspection from the AA.

If buying privately I understand that I would also need to buy a VIR to check for money owing or inconsistent odometer readings. Would I also need to get a VIR if buying from a dealer?

Is there any other due diligence I should be doing when buying either privately or from a dealer?

Thanks!

That is correct, whether you are buying from a private seller or dealer it is always recommended that you get an AA Pre-Purchase Inspection of the vehicle before you commit to purchasing it - to get a good idea of the condition of the vehicle. The WOF inspection is a safety inspection only and you shouldn’t rely on it as an indication of the condition of the vehicle.

An AA History Report is important to check for any financial interests owing on the vehicle. If you are buying from a Registered Motor Vehicle Trader (RMVT) then it is a lot safer as its the dealers responsibility to sell you a vehicle with a clear title unless they have informed you in writing of any financial interest owing on the vehicle. But to be safe it is in your best interest to check for any outstanding financial interest whether buying from a RMVT and privately - it is better to avoid ending up in a situation that might have to go to the courts to be resolved.

Also check for a WOF that is less than one month old.
