Lexus LX 450d 2016 car review

Diesel power forms a significant proportion of sales in the current SUV market in New Zealand and the LX premium large SUV - the first Lexus in NZ to debut a diesel engine - is about as big as it gets.

More curves than J-Lo

The LX range has received a real makeover. Only the door panels have been left untouched by the latest exterior changes. The bonnet now has more curves than J-Lo and the jury is out on whether it’s cool and functional, or just plain over the top. The 450d is a roomy five seater. But for those who seek even more space, there’s also an eight seat option available in the LX 570 which is powered with a 270kW 5.7ltr V8 petrol engine. Contributing to its fine looks are new LED headlights, sequential turn lights (that point like an arrow), fog lights and Daytime Running Lights.

An extra large Lexus

This vehicle is not for the timid or those who are afraid of navigating its enormous body around carparks. I admit to taking a few three point turns in this SUV while trying to navigate around our underground carpark here at the AA. It’s a bold statement vehicle that demands road respect. I mean, just look at that huge spindle grille! For its size, the LX turns very well and it weaved around the West Coast beaches with ease and comfort.

The interior has not gone untouched either with wood and satin chrome detailing used throughout, along with LED ambient lighting, a new look instrument cluster and a super large 12.3” infotainment screen. A feature I found intriguing was the wireless mobile phone charger. I’m not too sure if my phone was actually compatible but I thought it was a very good idea for eliminating those pesky cables. The interior layout is a welcome change with controls laid out in an easy-to-navigate manner. A dash of colour has been applied to the HUD (head up display) which projects simplified vehicle data such as current speed, navigation commands, audio settings and other selected data directly onto the windscreen in the driver’s view.

If you really want the top infotainment package you should go for the LX570 which has dual 11.6” screens to be enjoyed by rear seat passengers, along with the 19 speaker Mark Levinson premium audio package.

Always in control

2016 brings the important Lexus Safety System+ addition to the already comprehensive safety package that includes its Pre-Collision System and All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control which actually brings you to a complete stop to match traffic.

Both models are rated to tow a braked load of up to 3,500kgs and feature an amazing arrangement of drive modes like Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain select plus all sorts of Brake Assist, Traction and Stability controls. There is never any reason to be out of it (control).

The LX 450d is available from $159,900 and the LX 570 from $179,900.
