Skoda Superb 2016 car review

Simply Superb really sums this vehicle up in a nutshell. While smooth and rounded vehicles are common in the medium market, the Superb stands out and proudly displays its razor-sharp lines. According to Skoda, this car “represents 120 years of forward thinking” - so they’ve had a while to create a vehicle that’s just right.

Interior storage

Set on bright green, the ambient interior lighting running along the inside of the car reminded me of Star Wars lightsabres. Once I got past this, I soon realised that it complimented the lines and angles found throughout the interior of the Skoda. As I took in the surroundings, I thought about how sharp this car looks. The interior has a place to store all the things you need, such as two cooling boxes to keep your liquids and travel chocolate cold. There was also plenty of storage in the front and rear door pockets which was used to hold high visibility vests. Handy if you are after assistance in an emergency or you need to exit the car quickly on a busy road, but maybe the boot would be a better place to stow them so you’re able to make further use of the pockets.

I’ve lost count of how many times my phone has fallen out of my pocket and gone down the side of the door and under the seat so I found the neat little storage pocket on the side of the front seats extra handy as it was just big enough to hold my phone. And the convenience doesn’t stop there. You can store two umbrellas into the end of both front door panels. The boot has cargo nets everywhere, velcro adhesive plastic dividers to stop items sliding around and even a rechargeable LED torch that charges when you drive.

Willing assistant

Smart Light Assistant allows you to use high-beam for longer without blinding oncoming traffic. The system switches between low and high, and it can dim the high-beam lights by using a multifunctional camera located in the rear vision mirror. Lane and travel assistants use the camera in the rear vision mirror as well, and you also have Adaptive Cruise for convenience along with a Multi-Collision Brake system to help minimise accidents. Nine airbags ensure optimal occupant safety and the rear vision camera comes as standard. However, unless you splash out and buy the top-spec model, the very informative Parking Assistant feature will cost you an extra $950.

When it comes to choosing an engine, this may take a while as you are presented with four options - 6 or 7-speed DSG’s with two 4X4 options. The top turbo diesel 2ltr 4x4 pumps out 140kW and has a combined fuel economy of 4.9L/100km. The top petrol model is powered by an impressive 206kW 2ltr turbo engine and it boasts a combined fuel economy of 7.1L/100km - not bad for a four door medium sedan.

Prices for the Superb start from 45,900 for the 1.8 TSI 7-speed petrol and lead up to $60,900 for the top range 2.0 TSI 4X4 6-speed petrol. There’s also a wide range of optional extras for those who want more than the standard package.
